Ok, so everybody who has to file a tax return this year gets a little break, as April 15 falls on Saturday, placing the actual factual deadline on the following Monday, April 17. But for residents of the District (and a few northeastern states) Uncle Sam brings the extra generosity this year.
As it turns out, folks that live in D.C., along with those in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont (suck it, Rhode Island), have their federal tax returns processed at a giant IRS facility in Andover, Massachusetts. But Massachusetts is (typically) liberal with the vacation days, giving government employees off on the 17th to celebrate “Patriots Day,” which Wikipedia tells us is a day to honor the battle of Lexington and Concord. Therefore, we Washingtonians get an extra 24 hours to fill out those tax forms.
District residents also get an extra day to file their D.C. taxes. In 2004, Emancipation Day was declared an official holiday of the city, and it is this year celebrated on the 17th, pushing back the local tax deadline until Tuesday.
So that’s three weeks to the day for you Washingtonians. Sorry, Virginia and Maryland, we’ll all be out drinking on Sunday the 16th, but I guess you guys will be at home with your 1040s and such. Tough break.
