We didn’t think it was possible, but it’s happening: D.C. radio has somehow found a way to become even more bland. That’s because at 11am on Friday, Tony Kornheiser’s daily radio show will be ceasing live broadcasts — at least for a little while.
Kornheiser accepted a position in the Monday Night Football booth back in February, and his daily broadcast on Sportstalk 980 is a casualty of his new gig. Kornheiser will still tape PTI and presumably continue writing for the Post in his current, scaled-back role. But between those duties and a demanding MNF travel schedule — particularly for the notoriously flying-averse Kornheiser — there simply isn’t time for the radio show to continue. Fans are offering thanks, saying goodbye, and girding themselves for blog hater Colin “The Herd” Cowherd, who will be taking over TK’s timeslot.
The good news is that Mr. Tony has pledged to resume the show once the football season ends. We hope his return will be prompt. Kornheiser’s radio program has gone through a number of distinct incarnations, making the jump both to and back from ESPN Radio’s national stage. It has remained consistently quirky throughout, however, eschewing knuckleheaded athlete guests, parodying the sports talk establishment, and consistently showcasing Kornheiser’s entertaining personality in a way that his other media outlets don’t. Although we’ll be glad to see Tony in the MNF booth, we’ll still miss the color he brings to D.C.’s airwaves. Of course, if his own prediction comes true, Kornheiser will be fired from the Monday night broadcast by the third game. It will probably depend on how many times he says “You’re with me, leather” over the ESPN owned airwaves, but here’s hoping!
