Does it seem like there have been a lot of student protests recently at area universities? Fear not, tells us the Richmond Times-Dispatch, college students aren’t about to march on Washington and demand the president’s head. Sayeth the paper in an article published earlier this week:

Students marched at Virginia Tech, chanted at Radford University and camped in a building at the University of Virginia last month. They also protested at the College of William and Mary. But the events weren’t coordinated, and society is not about to be deluged by a wave of anti-establishment campus fervor, according to school administrators, students and observers across the state.

Phew! Thankfully someone is watching out for what those crazy students might be up to. But if not to royally stick it to the man, what might explain all the protesting these days, which we have even observed locally at American University, Gallaudet University and Georgetown University? Says an expert:

“The sap rises in April,” added Sandy Gilliam, secretary of U.Va.’s board of visitors, to explain the various protests last month. “I don’t mean to make light of it. The students protesting here a few weeks ago — it was done out of genuine idealism. But these things generally happen in the spring.”

Thankfully, the humid days of summer are coming soon. No one wants to start a revolution when it’s muggy out.
