Ahhh, Thursday. First day of the weekend. And a good day to play hooky and watch Trinidad and Tobago (powered by Howard alum Shaka Hislop) take on England at noon. And the news for the day:

Controversy Over Terrorism Funds Continues: Local officials feel they were cheated of valuable federal anti-terrorism funds. Federal officials claim that local requests of funds for anti-terror program were ineffective at best. Who should we believe? The Post is reporting that yesterday local officials had the chance to air their grievances against the $31 million cut in funds from the Department of Homeland Security, while today the feds will defend the cuts in a hearing before the House Government Reform Committee. Since local pol Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) chairs the committee, we’re guessing the feds are in for a rough ride.

District Officials Beg Youth to Be Good: Today is the first day of summer for District school-children. Since that means roving gangs of kids being kids (or just plain obnoxious), District officials yesterday encouraged the city’s kids to stay out of trouble and participate in city-sponsored programs, writes NBC 4. For those kids looking for good, wholesome fun, it is but a call away — the city has set up a toll free number, 202-IM-Bored, listing activities for the next 40 days.

Elected Officials Release Asset Reports: Curious how much your local representative is worth? If so, look no further — the Post notes that reports detailing the officials’ assets have been released. To pick two, Senator George Allen (R-Va.) is worth between $1.8 million and $3.6 million while D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton claims assets worth between $843,000 and $2.2 million. The reports also list any paid travel the pols accepted. The most posh? A $13,110 trip to Italy for Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), paid for by a local real estate developer and GOP contributor.

This Day in DCist: On this day last year, we found out that Mei Xiang might be pregnant with what came to be Butterstick, the D.C. Council debated traffic cameras, we saw a facelift at the Washington Times, and Jessica Cutler got served.

Briefly Noted: 55 illegal immigrants arrested at Dulles … Two shot in Southwest, one dead … Infamous Latino gang member arrested in District … AU students ask for removal of 13 trusteesGround-breaking for Pentagon Memorial today … Slots initiative in D.C. can move forward.
