We may as well mention it, since it’ll be the water-cooler talk of the day — that was quite the storm last night. According to the Post, it was so bad that many morning commutes today might be delayed — parts of the Beltway have been closed, all VRE train service has been cancelled, and Metro has been forced to close two stations along the Blue and Orange Lines due to high water. At the time of this writing, both the Blue-Orange and Green-Yellow Lines were suffering 20 minutes delays. And we haven’t seen the last of it, according to Capital Weather. We’re looking at another two days of rainy weather before a respite later this week.
Suburbia Pushes Westward: If you thought that living in Germantown or Fredricksburg and working in the District was a hike, imagine the morning commute in from Unger, West Virginia. As the Post reports, the sleepy rural town in the West Virginia panhandle has become a new destination for development, with prospective residents looking to push further and further away from the congested and crowded living of the suburbs within and beyond the Beltway. Current Unger residents are none too happy, of course, and have erected 75 colored outhouses along county roads to protest one specific development that will bring 54 houses to a 96-acre plot.
Metro Considers Spanish Signage: The Washington Times is reporting that Metro is considering a proposal to add Spanish-language signs to all 86 stations in the system, a project that would cost $500,000 per station and $900,000 for multi-level stations. The area has long been a magnet for Hispanic residents, and remains one of the few main transit systems in the country whose signs are only in one language.
District Kicks Off HIV/AIDS Testing Campaign: Hoping to act against an HIV/AIDS infection rate that rivals some developing countries, District officials have announced that they are distributing 80,000 testing kits across the city, hoping to test all residents aged 18 to 84. The District’s rate of infection for the disease remains high, and city officials have promised to take steps to handle it.
