DC United’s 17-year-old phenom, Freddy Adu, has previously expressed his desire to play overseas in a more competitive league. We just didn’t think that time would come so soon. Clubcall.com is reporting that Adu will be playing in Europe as early as this January. Reportedly, Adu has been linked to English Premier League giants Manchester United. Given that the team’s owner is American Malcolm Glazer (owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), this move makes some sense.
However, Freddy has been kept off of the score sheet for each of the 15 games he has played this season and is still viewed as unpolished, greatly decreasing his transfer value. Though his loss would have little impact on DC United, one of the deepest teams in MLS, we’d regret seeing such a prodigious talent leave town.

Gilbertology Postscript:

The loss of Gilbert Arenas, on the other hand, would have a devastating impact on the Wizards. That’s why we’re so anxious about a potential transfer to Miami. No, not to the reigning NBA champs–rather, to a county jail. After failing to show up for a court hearing stemming from a late night encounter with Miami police, a warrant was issued for Gilbert’s arrest. Thankfully, Wizards honcho Ernie Grunfeld stepped in and played the part of country club daddy, getting the hearing rescheduled and the warrant lifted. Apparently, Arenas had never received written notification of the hearing. Let’s hope Agent Zero finds a letter opener in his bag of tricks.
