D.C. Suburbs Wealthiest Counties in U.S: Yep, this is the good news this morning, kids. The people who live near and drive in to work in the District have more money on average than pretty much everyone else. In light of this fact, and the far more important fact that DCist staffers (and readers?) aren’t quite competing with those Loudoun County mucky-mucks, we’d like to solicit proposals for how best to start a process of wealth transfer from them to us. What do you think, telemarketing scams? Identity fraud? Pyramid schemes? Yeah, that’s the ticket. Pyramid schemes always work.
D.C. Commute 2nd Longest in Country: And now for the bad news. Apparently with all that extra wealth come extra minutes getting to and from work everyday. At an average 33 minutes per commute, the Washington region is second only to New York, whose commuters spend 34 minutes traveling each way. The silver lining, the Post story points out, is that more and more people are giving up their cars and switching to public transit — we place 3rd, behind only New York and San Francisco, with 13 percent of workers taking advantage of Metro. How long is your commute?
Tiger Cubs Go On Display: 9:45 a.m. this Saturday. Mark it down, people. Tiger. Cubs. Those fluffy balls of cuteness are making their public debut this weekend, and at the same time we’ll finally learn the names selected for the three cubs. And don’t think we haven’t already thought of the potential of Friday Tiger Blogging. These little tigers are going to be huge.
Briefly Noted: ‘Deranged otter attacks Woman’ … D.C. and Maryland SAT scores are up, Virginia and U.S. average down … Police looking for hit-and-run suspect who hit a jogger … Virginia Governor “actively considering” smoking ban in state govt. buildings … No one injured as shot fired at Anacostia Senior High School parking lot.
This Day in DCist: In 2005 we got excited about Taste of Bethesda, and in 2004 we noted poor turnout for a KKK rally in Sharpsburg.
