Just like everyone else this, we got so wrapped up in the election-related results this morning that we all but forgot that there’s other, well, news in the news.
Sloth Fights for Attention: Zoogoers have been all ga-ga for Butterstick and the yet-to-be-named tiger triplets over the recent year, so much so that most of the zoo’s other animals have just stopped trying. Except Balawat, our local baby sloth bear, writes the Post. Balawat’s new exhibit, part of the $53 million Asia Trail set to open October 17, will be the first zoo visitors see as they enter from Connecticut Avenue. And though we don’t often find sloth bears to be particularly cute, keeper Tracey Barnes claims that Balawat will be a big hit: “The panda cub is cuter in photographs, but the sloth bear cub is cuter in person.”
Ten Injured in Metrobus Accident: Two Metrobuses collided this morning at the intersection of 16th and Irving streets in Northwest, sending 10 people to the hospital, writes the Post. The reason for the collision? A driver ran a red light, forcing one bus to slam on its brakes suddenly, leaving the second no time to stop.
Crime Continues to Drop: According to police statistics released last night, crime continues to drop in the second month since the declaration of a crime emergency in the District on July 12, notes NBC 4. According to the statistics, adult arrests are up 6.5 percent from the same time last year, juvenile arrests are up 22 percent, violent crime is down 12.5 percent and property crime down 14 percent.
