Sure, you can grind, you can salsa, and maybe even do a little ballroom dancing, but how are you at caopeira? What about bhangra? Can you tell the swing dancers from the hand dancers?
The Dance DC Festival aims to introduce us to some of the lesser-known genres of dance, as well as highlight other popular styles. On Friday, you can check out Celebrating Living Traditions at the Calvary Baptist Church, which features three Latin dance groups as well as a West African drumming and dancing troupe.
Kick up your heels and shake those hips on Saturday. Learn everything from belly dancing, at 10 a.m., to mask-making with a South Indian dance group, at 4 p.m. The full schedule of events, held at Dance Place on 8th St NE, is online.
On Sunday, Dupont Circle becomes the stage. Dance Asia leads a processional, and Furia Flamenca performs as well. Performances continue later in the afternoon over at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, where Hui O Ka Pua ‘Ilima (a Hula artist), Rhythmaya Dance Company (a South Asian dance troupe) and Capoeira DC (which incorporates martial arts) all show what they can do.
If dance always seemed to expensive of a hobby to pick up, relax: all of the Dance DC events are free.
