Hey folks. We’re coming down off the high of the gorgeous fall weekend, but it’s Monday,
and the Redskins lost, again (heard this over the weekend and maybe we should save this
for Overheard, but whatever: “I think Joe Gibbs should be elected to lead the country.
Cause he’s doing the same damn thing as the president: NOTHING!”). Anyways, here’s this
morning’s news:
More Transportation Woes: That privately-backed plan to build express tollways along a part of the Beltway? Yeah, sorry. Looks like it’s so expensive that it may now need public funding. Public funding to the tune of 100 million dollars. Everybody smile!
New Interim GM for Metro: Jack Requa replaces our beloved Dan the
Man. Maybe this Jack guy, who was the chief operating officer for bus service (oh,
great…) can help us avoid situations like the one where we waited 25 minutes at West
Falls Church due to stupid track sharing. Make it go away.
Homeless Families in D.C. Double: The Post reports that in the past decade, homeless families have more than doubled
in the District, “a problem worsened by rising rents and a steady decline in the supply of
low-cost housing.” Apparently Mayor Williams’ “Homeless No More” initiative isn’t doing so
hot.
Gunshot Sensors Help Police: D.C. police are getting to some shootings before
anyoen’s even called 911 – and it’s a technology called ShotSpotter that’s helping them. The sensors, 48 of which are installed along with
security cameras in the city, many of them in the Southeast, pick up gunshot sounds and
send word to the police departments as soon as shots are fired. Check back on the site for more on this later today.
Ladybugs=Death: Most importantly of all, the Post is here to warn you of a
seriously dire threat – ladybugs are going to eat your eyeballs while you sleep, and maybe also your
children. Read it and be terrified. 40,000 in one spot?? Christ on a bike.
Briefly Noted: People are throwing rocks at cars (welcome
to the world of D.C. bikers) … Jim Vance of NBC is writing (dare we say blogging?) from Alaska …
This Day in DCist: In 2004, we found out what those huge gray lockers were for and talked about ad campaigns promoting quitting smoking.
