Thor Leaving Birreria, Taking Hammer With Him
For those of you who haven’t been to Birreria Paradiso, the basement bar in Pizzeria Paradiso in Georgetown, I recommend you go now. Thor Cheston, the genius behind Birreria’s high-quality-only beer selection, is setting sail for different shores. In a posting to the D.C.-Beer mailing list, and re-posted to Don Rockwell, Thor said goodbye to Washington, indicating he was leaving for Philadelphia at the end of month. Damn you, Philly! I knew Philly was conspiring against us; I guess they’re still bitter about that whole not being the nation’s capital thing.

Thor is leaving his post as beer master to Greg Jasgur, who currently bartends for Birreria, and who Cheston describes as into “hoppy west coast beers,” so we may be able to expect fewer Hennepins and a few more Hop Ottins. If you want to get in on some great beer with tasty pizza to go along with it, be sure to get tickets for Thor’s final two beer tastings. The next tasting will focus on German Beers, and takes place Monday the 20th. The last tasting is on Monday the 27th, and will focus on American beers, “the most exciting place for beer on earth,” according to Birreria. Each tasting is $60 a person, comes with a three course meal, and you get to taste 15 beers.

Tickets for the events are scarce, so you better get your name in. Send your whole name, email address, and number in your party to info@eatyourpizza.com, or call 202-337-4936. Get in there to soak up some of Thor’s beer knowledge before he leaves for Philly and promptly loses it due to the carcinogens in Cheez Whiz.
