Oh, the holiday shopping season. Preparing the troops to invade local malls, throwing punches over a video game player, listening to Jingle Bells until your ears bleed. Good times. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Don’t know what to get mom-in-law? Finally impress her with your cultural know-how by gift wrapping some ART this holiday season. Galleries are listening, and have a few deals for you bargain shoppers.

>>Cheap for Charity: What’s better than a Cheap Art Sale? The District of Ladies, a group committed to encouraging and assisting women artists, is holding the sale to benefit Hermanas Unidas. All artwork is by local women, including Pat Goslee, Carrie Lipscomb, and Alexandra Silverthorne. Even better, each piece is under $100 and 50% of the proceeds go to assist Latina survivors of domestic violence. Stop by La Casa Community Center at 3166 Mt Pleasant St NW (Columbia Heights metro) this Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

>>Art for Brunch: Go get your Sunday mimosa at a Holiday Open Studio party. Silverthorne makes another appearance (you may have also seen her work at the recently opened City Hall art collection), along with Matt Achhammer and Robert Walton to welcome guests into their workspace, mingle and purchase art at a third the price. Catch it at 2800 Wisconsin Ave. NW, #707 starting at 2 p.m.

>>You Can See Yourself In This Party: Another holiday party? Yes, please. The Washington Glass School in Mt. Ranier, Md., is showing off their stuff with food, music, bargain basement prices on (but top-of-the-line quality) art, and much more. Sit in on some impromptu classes and, really, you have to go if just for the Fire Spinning Performance by Sarah Lovering at 4:30 p.m. Stop by to see their new studio space this Saturday between 2 and 6 p.m.
