What are you willing to stand in line for hours on end for? Tickets to a Star Wars prequel? A copy of Harry Potter #7? A really awesome roller coaster?

To some members of the D.C. community, the answer is free tickets to a sing-along performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Kennedy Center, accompanied by the Kennedy Center Opera House orchestra, a large-scale choir, and renowned soloists. The event is one of the most popular holiday gatherings in the area, and though it’s free, it’s tougher than you might think to snag a seat and sing “All We Like Sheep.”

According to the Kennedy Center, a group of enthusiastic fans camp out overnight on the day before the giveaway — which is at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Dec. 9 — in order to ensure they get a ticket. The venue’s spokeswoman recommends that those interested in getting tickets get in line by 7 a.m. to make sure they’re successfhul. And dress warmly — you’ll be waiting outside, not in the building. The parking garage will be open early, but street parking shouldn’t be too hard to find around Foggy Bottom that early in the morning.

Sound like too much hassle for a Saturday morning just to get your Christmas classical fix? There’s always the standby ticket route — individuals usually line up around 4 or 5 p.m. the day of the performance, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m., to take their chances.
