How do you like that wind, D.C.? And the still pretty cold temperatures? Well this nonsense is here to stay through the weekend, with the possibility of some wintry mix on Sunday. Lovely. We feel sure, however, that spring is still just around the corner. It has to be! So let’s try our best to keep on the sunny side of life until it gets here, current temperatures be damned. For instance, instead of focusing on how cold it is in your office, why not ponder how lucky we all are that our government doesn’t prescribe electroshock therapy for “Internet addiction.”
Wind Causes Power Outages: You probably don’t need us to tell you that we’ve been under a wind advisory since last night, which lasts through 10 a.m. this morning. WTOP has word that strong gusts are responsible for downing several powerlines in the city overnight. Tell the truth. Did last night’s happy hour cause you to stroll into the office a little late today? Well now you have the perfect excuse. At 8:20 a.m. Pepco was still reporting about 2000 power outages across the metro area. Who is to say you weren’t one of them?
Zoning Nominee on Defense: One of Mayor Fenty’s nominees to the zoning commission, Geoff Griffis, has come under fire with accusations of unethical conduct during his time as chair of the Board of Zoning Adjustment, and the Examiner details his attempts to defend his record at a hearing on Thursday. Griffis is one of several Fenty nominees to different commissions, including Herb Scott to the D.C. Board of Education (nomination withdrawn), and Ben Soto to the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission, who have been met with opposition from the D.C. Council.
Briefly Noted: Two fires in as many days at Northeast middle school … Mass fish deaths in Potomac blamed on natural causes … District near settlement with Rosenbaum family … D.C. Schools will order textbooks early this year … Teen died playing Russian Roulette.
This Day in DCist: In 2006 we located the GoogleCenter of the District (and a few other cities), and in 2005 we found a memorial in Clarendon to the troops killed in Iraq.
