It’s a good year to be a last-minute tax filer in Washington. (As if there’s ever a good time to send your hard-earned dollars to the government.) First there was Emancipation Day, now the District Office of Tax and Revenue is granting an automatic two-day extension for filling your D.C. income taxes. This short reprieve is in response to yesterday’s wind and rain, which knocked out power around the area. Local tax forms are now due by midnight on April 19. The office’s free tax preparation service will also be extended through Thursday. The walk-in service is available from 8:15 a.m. to 6:00 pm, at 941 North Capitol Street, NE.

Taxpayers throughout the Northeast already got the welcome news yesterday that the IRS extended the deadline for federal returns in response to Monday’s powerful storms. Those affected need to mark their return with the words “April 16 Storm.” The IRS said people filing electronically should use the “disaster feature” in their tax-prep software. Washingtonians don’t need to add any note to their D.C. forms, as the District made its extension automatic.

For procrastinators still trying to get forms postmarked today, USPS is keeping the Capitol Hill Post Office at 2 Massachusetts Ave., NE open until 11:59 p.m. tonight. The Friendship Heights office will also be open until 10:00 p.m. No word yet on whether such accommodations will be made on Thursday. Maybe they’ll figure that the 108 extra hours we got this year was good enough.
