Today, Washington is still dealing with the aftermath of losing so many area residents at Virginia Tech and trying to grasp the scope of Monday’s events. Even those not connected to the school have been moved to prayer and shows of support. In situations like these, many of us feel powerless, yet some gain strength by joining others to reflect and remember.
Yesterday students at UVa, Georgetown, Galluadet, Howard, UMd, Catholic University, American, UDC, GW and elsewhere observed moments of silence and vigils for those lost.
Today, several other memorials will take place in the D.C. area. At noon, Georgetown will hold another ecumenical interfaith service for students at Sellinger Lounge. The Northern Virginia and National Capital Region chapters of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association hosts a vigil at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Great Falls tonight at 8 p.m.. A candlelight vigil will also take place at Old Town Market Square at City Hall, 300 King St., in Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend both non-denominational service.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will host a community gathering tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the County Government Center in Fairfax.
Friday has been declared “Hokie Hope Day”, when people throughout the country can show their solidarity with the entire Virginia Tech community by wearing orange and maroon, the school’s colors.
Feel free to let us know about other services and memorials taking place around the region. We’ll post more events as they’re scheduled.
