The Examiner reports today that the D.C. Taxicab Commission released its new zone-fare map to District cab drivers to place in their vehicles this week. Which seems odd, since the maps have been ready since February, and have been spotted in various cabs in the city since then (though by no means all of them). The new maps, part of Mayor Adrian Fenty’s 100 Day plan, were designed to be less confusing than the old ones, which lacked clear boundary markings and were oriented so that north was on the left instead of at the top of the map.
Whatever the reason for the delay in giving the new maps to all of the District’s cab drivers, word is now that the Taxicab Commission intends to achieve full compliance with posting them inside taxis by the end of July. Mayor Fenty will have to decide by October of this year whether to move forward with a federal request to switch all D.C. taxis to meters.
