Because we like to bring you great bands and great things to do around D.C. as often as we possibly can, DCist has teamed up with Bliss Pop and Brightest Young Things in the name of a great night at the 9:30 Club. On September 8, join your favorite internet types and your favorite music types as DJ Will Eastman, Georgie James, The Dance Party and Soft Complex fill our city’s finest music hall with local flavor.
All four bands have graced DCist’s pages in the past. Will Eastman’s been owning DJ decks all around the city for more than six years. He was one of our first Three Stars subjects back in 2005, when he told us that the weirdest request he ever got was, “Electric Light Orchestra. The guy even had the CD and pressed it into my hand. But I think I shocked him even more when I said ‘No thanks, I have my own copy’ and played ‘Sweet Talking Woman.’ Those strings!” You can get a sample of Will’s skills at blisspop.com
Georgie James is, as everyone knows, a favorite around these parts. They’ve played, DJ’d and contributed to Unbuckleds, and been the subject of plenty of debate in the comment section. When we talked to the band last year, they had this to say about their sound:
It sounds like there was a conscious effort to capture a certain folk/rock style from the 70s in your music. It’s an interesting choice, because so many others are busy recycling the 80s at the moment, and because it also ends up sounding really fresh. How did you guys end up with that sound? Was there a decision to go in a different direction from what others seemed to be doing?
I don’t think it was a conscious decision to be contrarian. I think it was more a matter of us both loving music from those eras and wanting to explore that side of our songwriting. It’s true that there aren’t as many people looking back to that era as there are, as you say, people mining the 80s. So, there wasn’t that deterrent. We’re not really looking to do anything retro or revivalist. We just love a lot of music from that time and it’s pretty clearly reflected in what we’re writing. But it’s not a mission or anything like that.
Soft Complex and The Dance Party are both Three Stars alums and ubiquitous around local clubs, but if you’ve somehow managed to not see them perform yet, September 8 is your lucky day. There’s not much we can add to describing The Dance Party that their name doesn’t already imply, but they’re a raucous and silly group of rockers who are dead set on having a good time and bringing you with them. Soft Complex specialize in straight forward rock that draws from influences like Morrissey and The Cure, with a modern edge to keep things interesting. You can listen to tracks from both bands on their websites.
You sold yet? Mark your calendars for 9/8/07 for a nap and a late show at the 9:30 Club. Doors are at 11 p.m, and $10 will get you in the door.
