FRIDAY:
>> Do the right thing and head to 9:30 Club for a show hosted by the strange gathering of the likes of Gypsy Eyes Records, The Federal Reserve and haberdasherie Propper Topper for a benefit for the DC Public Library Foundation. Kitty Hawk, Vandaveer, Revival, These United States and many more make up the crowded bill. 7:30 p.m., $20.
>> The Brunettes (pictured right) perform sickly sweet but addictive pop duets, and they’ll be singing their groovy tunes with Ferraby Lionheart and the Fairline Parkway at 9:30 p.m. at the Rock and Roll Hotel. $12.
>> Don’t miss our preview of Donnie, who will be at the Black Cat in support of his recent release, The Daily News, along with British vocalist Julie Dexter. 9 p.m., $20.
SATURDAY:
>> Enjoy the sky through the crisp 80 degree fall air this Saturday with the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club. They’re holding their 25th Annual star gazing party just a short drive away in C.M. Crockett Park, in Fauquier County, Va. Pack a picnic and get there early — solar gazing starts at 3 p.m. Then stay to watch Jupiter rise in the south, but you’ll get to see much more than planets with some of the hard core scopes (some homemade) these hobbyists use, sending you into deep sky territory. Maybe you’ll even catch a “falling star,” as the Draconid meteor shower approaches its peak this weekend. The star party is free and open to the public; read the web site for directions and notes on what to bring.
>> Environmentalists will descend upon the city this weekend for the annual Green Festival held at the Convention Center, Saturday (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Stroll through the booths where you can buy products and learn about renewable energy, socially responsible investing, eco-art, and, without even having to wait until March, “green” beer and wine. A slew of speakers will hold court through the weekend, including, naturally, Ralph Nader. General admission is $15 at the door, or $10 for seniors, students, union members and bicyclists, free for kids 12 and under. More ticket info here.
>> Didn’t get enough outdoor neighbohood street festival action last weekend? It’s Columbia Heights Day. Start at the Wonderland Ballroom Bandstand for a live performance, then stroll down 11th street and hit the park for vendors and food options. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
>> Beer lovers have nothing to complain about this weekend. For starters, there’s the Blocktoberfest at RFK, which features bands in addition to booze, as well as Cap City Brewery’s own event honoring the German festival. Additionally, Caps fans attending Saturday’s season opener can take advantage of drink specials as part of the Caps on Tap bar tour before the game, and the Brickskeller celebrates its 50th anniversary with a party on Sunday.
SUNDAY:
>> The Hispanic Heritage Festival 2007 offers a variety of music en español, from the likes of El Grupo Algodon (El Salvadorian folk); Javier Julian (bachata); Mama Cesta (rock en Espanol); Zeniza Allstars (salsa) and more. 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the town green in Herndon , 777 Lynn St., Herndon, VA. Call (703) 787-7300 or (301) 213-6952 for more information.
