The Anacostia River, which has been blamed for altering the gender of fish and producing a funky smell, just got funkier. The Post is reporting that raw sewage is flowing into the Anacostia River from a leak in a major sewer line that carries untreated waste from a pumping station in Southeast Washington, D.C. Thanks, WASA!
The cause and size of the leak was not immediately known, and WASA’s chief engineer claimed it was the first time a leak of this kind had ever occurred. He was also quick to note that this leak likely isn’t putting any more raw sewage into the Anacostia than what usually happens after a heavy rain in the city, when the sewer system produces runoff.
Still, it’s not exactly great timing for WASA to have another ugly headline associated with the agency. And don’t get us started on the people who still insist that swimming in the river is perfectly safe.
Editor’s note: I apparently suffered from some kind of stroke when I was writing this. Please note that I do in fact know the difference between the Anacostia River and the Potomac River. Apologies for this ridiculous error.
