In the contest that was “Capital Pride Producer Idol” (Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it?), we now have a winner. The Whitman-Walker Clinic (WWC) will turn the event over to the Capital Pride Alliance next year.
The Alliance is a relatively new group formed last year by longtime members of the Capital Pride Committee. The group beat out three others: the LGBT Community Center; the Southwest Renaissance Development Corporation, formed by the Westminster Presbyterian Church; and Jansi Media, LLC, which not only owns Metro Weekly, but also publishes the guides for both D.C. Black Pride and Capital Pride.
WWC announced yesterday that the Alliance was the best choice to produce the week-long event, which costs about $120,000 annually and is the fourth largest pride event in the country. ReGina Newkirk, director of development at WWC, told the Blade, “As current members of the Capital Pride Committee, they have extensive experience in organizing the event and presented a detailed, long-term plan to make sure the event is successful in the years to come.”
In a statement, Alliance president Michael Lutz said, “Capital Pride is ready to stand on its own and provide resources and visibility to those organizations that have helped make it a strong, proud symbol of the GLBT community in our Nation’s capital.”
WWC will remain the event’s lead producer this year as part of a transitioning process to hand over the event to the Alliance.
