Good morning, Washington, and welcome to Friday. Most of us have the beginning of another summer weekend on our minds, but the weather-related local headlines are bringing that optimism down just a little. First off, today is a Code Red Air Quality Day. True, this means buses in Northern Virginia and nearby Maryland counties are free. But it also means just being outside and breathing the air could be harmful to your health. Keep that in mind when making lunch plans today. Second, has it seemed like the mosquitoes are especially bad this year to you, too? We’re not imagining things: the consistent thunderstorms this summer that have ensured the metro area is totally over last year’s drought have also provided the perfect breeding ground for a bazillion extra mosquitoes. Hoping to BBQ tomorrow? Stock up on repellent.
Homeless Shelter Sale Approved: In their extra special session Thursday, the D.C. Council went ahead and voted to approve the sale of the Gales School building to Central Union Mission in exchange for their property in the 3500 block of Georgia Ave. NW, despite concerns that the city was getting the raw end of the deal financially. Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham spearheaded the deal on behalf of his constituents in Petworth and Columbia Heights who angrily prevented the shelter from opening on Georgia Ave.
CFSA Crafts New Gameplan: It’s tough times over at the District’s Child and Family Services Agency. A day after director Sharlynn Bobo resigned amid controversy surrounding the agency’s ability to handle its caseload, the Post writes about what will come next: stealing social workers from other city offices and hiring more staff in the hopes of getting a handle on things as quickly as possible. Let’s hope none of the agencies that see some of their workers heading over to CFSA suffer from subsequent caseload problems as well.
Briefly Noted: Trial set in Metro prostitution case … Treasury Dept. lawyer indicted on drug charges … Hazardous materials incident shuts down Dupont Circle Metro station late Thursday night.
This Day in DCist: Last year we were giggling like little children over an unintentionally hilarious Washington Post headline, and the year before that we were taking on a troll blog.
