Good morning, Washington. If you were intrigued by yesterday’s widespread speculation that Va. Governor Tim Kaine might be Barack Obama’s running mate, today’s news is likely to pique your interest as well. Via Marc Ambinder, it seems that Kaine has suddenly canceled tonight’s appearance at a Baltimore fundraiser. Telling hint, or total coincidence? We’ll have to wait and see.
Indictments In Feb. Street Racing Deaths: Back in February eight people were killed when Darren Bullock’s car plowed into a crowd of people assembled on the road to watch an illegal street race. Police initially thought that exhaust or tire smoke from the race prevented Bullock from seeing the pedestrians as his car approached. That’s not the theory any more, as the Post reports. Witness interviews and security camera footage now indicate that Bullock and Tavon Taylor were also racing when they came upon the spectators of the other illegal street race. The article quotes an anonymous source as saying that Bullock and Taylor were traveling at 110 mph with their headlights off at the time of the collision (the Washington Times’ coverage attributes a similar quote to an unnamed county official). Both men are now facing manslaughter and reckless driving charges.
Montgomery Sounds Note of Caution on Music Hall Project: The Fillmore music hall project has been in the works for a while now, but the Post reminds us that it’s not yet a done deal. Yesterday Montgomery County Planning Board Chairman Royce Hanson voiced concerns about the proposed plan, which would bypass significant parts of the county’s normal review process. Project boosters responded by accusing Hanson of overemphasizing process and bureaucratic power at the expense of what’s best for Silver Spring.
