No one is suggesting the Super Bowl is in our future. But with a 29-24 win against the New Orleans Saints yesterday at FedEx Field, we can safely remove ourselves from the ledge and take a deep breath. While I’m not actually sure what a “schneid” is, fans across the metropolitan area are happy the Redskins have gotten off of it.
After a painful first half, when the offense seemed to be allergic to the end zone, the Redskins rallied from behind and flashed some offensive muscle for the first time in this early season. The much-maligned Jason Campbell had a solid game, finishing 24 of 36 for 321 yards and a 104.1 passer rating, including the game winning 65 yard strike to Santana Moss. The aforementioned Moss finished with seven catches for 164 yards and Clinton Portis had another solid outing with 96 yards and two touchdowns. Last week’s invisible man, Chris Cooley came through with five big catches for 72 yards. Must have been that spaghetti.
When it comes to the defense, perhaps we were a little too hasty in our judgement of last week’s performance. Yesterday the defensive unit did a fantastic job stopping Reggie Bush and Drew Brees, applying pressure and forcing turnovers. Defensive end Jason Taylor had his first sack as Redskins and last-second addition and seventh round draft pick Chris Horton came away with three turnovers and quite possibly a new starting job at strong safety. Also yesterday, the New York Giants put 44 points up against the lowly Rams in St. Louis. So maybe giving up 16 points to the defending champions on their home turf in week one wasn’t too bad after all.
