Photo by Geoff Forester, courtesy Episcopal Diocese of New HampshireWith the controversy surrounding Rev. Rick Warren’s inaugural invocation, the LGBT blogosphere lit up when the Presidential Inaugural Committe announced that the openly gay Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson would open Sunday’s inaugural concert at the Lincoln Memorial. But those watching the live event and the subsequent repeat on HBO didn’t get to see the invocation. Some who actually attended the event also reported that they couldn’t hear the invocation at all. Episcopal Cafe has a transcript of Robinson’s invocation.
In a related note, we’ve noticed some complaints in comments on various blogs about the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington not being identified on-air. In fairness, none of the choirs that performed were named on air, save for the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club, which was introduced by Tiger Woods.
Update, 3:15 p.m.: Both HBO and the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) are pointing the finger at each other for not airing the invocation. A rep from HBO told AfterElton.com last night via email, “The producer of the concert has said that the Presidential Inaugural Committee made the decision to keep the invocation as part of the pre-show.”
Meanwhile, Josh Earnest of the PIC told AMERICAblog, “We had always intended and planned for Rt. Rev. Robinson’s invocation to be included in the televised portion of yesterday’s program. We regret the error in executing this plan – but are gratified that hundreds of thousands of people who gathered on the mall heard his eloquent prayer for our nation that was a fitting start to our event.” Never mind the reports that audio malfunctions caused thousands in attendance to miss the invocation.
