On the subject of long-haulin’ it, Charlie Daniels has perhaps the definitive word. In the liner notes to his legendary 1974 album Fire on the Mountain, Daniels wrote, “Hungover. Red eyed. Dog tired. Satisfied. It’s a long road with a little wheel and it takes a lot of turns to get there. Thank you, damn it.”
Has anyone penned a line more appropriate for Rolling Thunder? Or for Memorial Day in general? I think not. To our soldiers past and present I say: thank you, damn it. Crank up some “Devil Went Down to Georgia” and check out some Rolling Thunder portraits from the DCist photo pool.
