In our frenzy to celebrate the birth of another fuzzy-wuzzy clouded leopard cub, we failed to report that two other baby animals were also born at the National Zoo in the last few days.

First, the Zoo’s female Przewalski’s horse, Brandy, recently gave birth to a foal and has been observed successfully nursing. Przewalski’s horses are extinct in the wild, and the National Zoo runs an extensive Przewalski’s horse conservation program.

Second, yet another red panda cub, born to the Zoo’s female red panda, Panya, was found in her nest box by keepers early Friday morning. This is the fifth red panda birth at the National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center in the last three weeks. Red Pandas are also endangered.

None of these newborn animals will be on display at the CRC, unfortunately.
