Normally we wouldn’t care about something like this much, but this is the District’s representative in Congress we’re talking about here. Nope, not D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, but Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-D.C.Texas). During President Obama’s Wednesday night speech on health care, Gohmert managed not to violate age-old rules of congressional decorum, though he did spend the better part of the speech waving a sign that said “What Bill” on one side and “What Plan” on the other.

This isn’t the first time Gohmert has pulled out a prop during a congressional debate, though. In the midst of the 2007 hearing in which Gohmert announced that from that point on he would represent the District of Columbia in Congress, the Texas Republican waved an oversized copy on an excerpt of the Constitution to stress the point that granting us voting rights would be unconstitutional. Rep. Gohmert, we appreciate you trying to stimulate visually otherwise staid policy debates, but think about laying off the props for a while. After all, we District residents are a respectful bunch, and we expect only the best from those that seek to represent our interests in Congress.
