Word from D.C. Superior Court is that suspended Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has entered a guilty plea to a single felony count of carrying a firearm without a license. City Paper’s Mike DeBonis tweets that sentencing has been set for Mar. 26, and that prosecutors have agreed to recommend a sentence on the lowest end of federal guidelines, which in this case carry a maximum of 6 months. That doesn’t mean that Arenas will spend six months in jail, though. It will be up to the judge to determine the amount of time he’ll have to serve, and whether that sentence might be suspended.
Dan Steinberg provides a little color from the courtroom:
Arenas wore a charcoal, pinstriped suit and spoke quietly, all “yes sirs” and “no sirs.”
The Post reports that Arenas has been released pending sentencing, but he does have to surrender his passport as well as all his guns.
And here’s the statement from Arenas’s attorney, Ken Wainstein:
“Earlier this afternoon, Gilbert Arenas appeared before the Honorable Robert E. Morin of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and pled guilty to a charge of carrying a pistol in the District of Columbia without a license. He accepted full responsibility for his actions, acknowledged that those actions were wrong and against the law, and has apologized to all who have been affected by his conduct. Mr. Arenas appreciates the professionalism of the authorities handling this matter.”
