Families Forward Inc., the contractor in charge of running the city’s largest shelter for homeless families, is getting the boot, Jason Cherkis reports over at City Desk.
Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells tells City Desk that Families Forward Inc. will lose their contract by month’s end to operate the shelter, which is located on the D.C. General campus.
Wells says that Clarence Carter, director of the Department of Human Services, “gave me the message that their contract will be terminated at the end of the month.”
The move comes a couple of weeks after Cherkis first began reporting a number of serious problems at the facility, including mold, poor quality food, lengthy waits to see case workers, the death of a newborn inside the facility, and accusations that staff members were attempting to solicit sexual favors from residents. Those allegations were eventually confirmed by Families Forward.
