The waffle sandwich at The Passenger

We find out via Eater that the July/August issue of Food Network Magazine named the best breakfasts in each of the 50 states and the District. For D.C., the magazine lists Fried Chicken, Eggs and Waffles at Founding Fathers [sic] Farmers.

We’ve never had it, but it seems likely there are superior breakfasts to be had in the District. (Though there is something dastardly about eating the chicken and the egg together.) And it seems that they haven’t done enough research, as they weren’t even able to give the correct name of the restaurant, Founding Farmers, which would have only required a quick Google search. It appears that Eater seems to have mistyped and watches too many episodes of Bones.

The first that comes to mind is the pancake sandwich at Bar Pilar. Though technically brunch, it consists of two pancakes filled with scrambled egg and applewood smoked bacon and a side of maple syrup. So many times pancakes smell better than they taste, but these pancakes live up to the sweet smell with a perfect spongy but not overly chewy texture.

And if pancakes aren’t your deal, you can get your bacon and eggs wedged between two waffles at The Passenger (though their “brunch” doesn’t start until 2 p.m.). What would you cite as your favorite breakfast item in D.C.?
