We had noted last week that the projected number of gun seizures in the District were way down this year in comparison to recent years, chalking it up to either a reduction in the number of guns available for police to seize, or improved tactics among those who possess illegal guns in keeping them hidden from police.

So it was with great interest that we read about the Metropolitan Police Department’s newest initiative to get illegal firearms off the street: “Got Guns” will offer anonymous informants the chance to tip police off to the whereabouts to illegal guns by calling 888-919-CRIME. The new program, which offers up to $1,000 in reward money for tipsters, was announced on Friday at the kick off of last weekend’s All Hands On Deck policing.

We have to ask, though — who is naming these programs? Shouldn’t there be a question mark in there somewhere? (The Examiner added one, but the press release we received on Friday didn’t have it.) Perhaps the police department would be better served with leaving such clever titling to us bloggers.
