Carlos Allen sure seems like an interesting guy. Beyond his claim to fame as the second White House crasher, the self-proclaimed first Afro-Latino in history has continued his independent quest for the city’s highest elected office. But beyond a few campaign signs and a lucky drawing to be first on November’s ballot, there’s not really much evidence of a concerted effort to actually win the general election. Until now.
Allen recently posted a music video on his campaign website, clearly trying to take after Ron Moten’s multiple pro-Fenty jams in the lead-up to September Democratic primary. Sure, the production values are a little lower than what Moten churned out, and it’s not so much a music video than it is a slideshow set to music. But still, props for trying, right?
Well, no. The song is set to the tune of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” which, while a fine song, is all about New York. Maybe his campaign advisors didn’t tell him, so we feel we should — stoking D.C. pride and trying to get people to vote for you is best done with a song that isn’t directly identified with a whole other city, especially when that city is New York.
