WTOP’s Adam Tuss reports that the WMATA system map, as iconic a piece of modern Washingtoniana as there is, will be undergoing some big changes in the near future to accommodate the expansion to Dulles International Airport and (sigh) potentially longer station names. (For example: ANC 6D is considering changing the name of L’Enfant Plaza to L’Enfant Plaza/Banneker Memorial.) There are some interesting tidbits in Tuss’ report — like the fact that silver has not yet been officially selected as the color of the line going to Dulles, and that WMATA has not ruled out moving away from making a completely radical change and transitioning from the color-based system to numbers. We find it hard to believe that a proposal to move away from colors would be seriously considered, but, hey, you never know.

Obviously, there’s got to be some better ideas for improving the Metro map that wouldn’t require us all to totally rewire the way we think about it. The comments are your virtual suggestion box, people — go crazy.
