Photo by NivadNews came out last night that the din of 14th Street would will find itself a little more quiet come January. HR-57 owner and director Tony Puesan confirmed with the Washington City Paper last night that the destination jazz club/music cultural center will pack up and move to H and 9th Streets NE sometime the first week of January. Cheaper property taxes was put forth as the impetus for the move.
HR-57 has been a mainstay of the 14 Street corridor since 1993 and has featured the country’s best jazz musicians in an unadulterated environment. WCP reporter Michael West brings up several worries over the center’s move to NE. While the move to an up-and-coming neighborhood would be a symbiotic relationship, infusing new energy into each other, how will accessibility and transit affect their bottom line?
As for the current HR-57 space that will be sold off by Puesan, speculation has already started over what will move in.
