A large majority of people appear to be taking their leave of Washington this afternoon, what with the federal government pretty much closing up for the year and many workers having the day off tomorrow. So whether you’re readying to be one of the seventy percent of people who won’t get an accurate screening from a TSA agent, preparing to hop behind the wheel or simply thinking about traveling around the region, here’s a quick look at how things are going around the area’s transportation hubs.

There’s been a lot of hubbub about wicked weather causing some serious issues with people being able to get out of Washington via plane, but so far, things seem to be going fine. At last check, delays at Dulles and National are pretty much non-existent, while BWI is experiencing some random holdups, but nothing catastropic. One logistical note: parking at National is filling up quickly, so take Metro or cab it, if you weren’t already planning on doing so. We imagine the scene at airports will get crazier once the afternoon arrives, but if you’ve got an flight during the day today, you should be in pretty good shape.

Taking the train out of Union Station is also easy sailing so far. It’s worth noting that Amtrak doesn’t really add capacity during Christmas time, so things might get a little cramped as people hustle to get out tonight. If you’re planning on using regional rail to visit nearby friends or relatives, note that Virginia Railway Express is running on a limited schedule today, and neither VRE or MARC will be running service tomorrow.

If you’re driving north up Interstate 95, WTOP says that you’re probably going to run into the same problems that everyone experienced during the Thanksgiving holiday — as usual, you can just blame Delaware, whose Department of Transportation has officially made the apocalyptic claim that “predicted impacts are expected to be greater than in recent years and could stretch for miles and take hours to clear.” We haven’t heard too many other issues on area roads — but this evening’s rush hour will most assuredly be a nightmare.

Sticking around town or heading out tomorrow? Just a reminder that Metrorail will be operating from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. and Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
