Whenever a slow news day hits the District, we can always count on the National Zoo to lift us from the doldrums. The Zoo announced today that two cheetah cubs have been born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. They’re the first cheetahs to be born at the facility — one each to five-year-old Amani and nine-year-old Zazi earlier this month.
It’s a good thing that the two were born at the Institute — according to the Zoo, singletons like these cubs are usually left to die in the wild, since their mothers do not produce enough milk to sustain them when they deliver only one cub. The combination of the two cubs, though, should coax one of the mama cheetahs to produce an acceptable amount of milk, enabling future cuteness.
You can get a ton of information about the cheetah babies here, but I’m more than willing to wager that none of you even got this far into the text before clicking through the adorable pictures above. (If you did, your attention span is exemplary — congratulations!)
