UPDATE (2:20 p.m.): Those interpreting this news as an indication of TBD.com’s demise may want to hold back a bit. Erik Wemple, who took the job as TBD’s general manager after Brady left the organization, was quick to put a positive spin on the WJLA take over. “In terms in what you see [on the website], I don’t think it will be that different,” Wemple said. Wemple also indicated that the move shouldn’t immediately affect staffing levels at the organization, and said that he has a good relationship with WJLA station manager Bill Lord. “I think he respects what we do,” said Wemple.
“We have a good staff to play with here, and everyone is engaged here on what we consider important stories,” affirmed Wemple. “The way I measure ownership by is level of investment and it continues to be robust.”
The Washington Post is reporting that local news website TBD.com will be “taken over” by WJLA-TV. Allbritton Communications owns both media properties. The Post reports that Bill Lord, currently station manager at WJLA, will “take over operations” at TBD.com, which officially launched last August, but experienced a shakeup in leadership when Jim Brady stepped down as general manager in November citing conflicts with the future direction of the organization.
According to our sources, there isn’t much clarity about what the WJLA “take over” will mean as far as the day-to-day operations of the website are concerned.
