Now, 20 years later and after a series of soulful recordings in the 90s on the legendary Blue Note label, he has established himself as one of the finest pianists of his generation. >> A talented saxophonist and alum of the University of Maryland’s jazz program, Lyle Link will be leading his quartet this Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.
>> Vocalist Lizz Wright grew up singing in church and then pursued a career at the intersection of gospel and jazz. She will appear at the Birchmere on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. set. $35 + fees.
>> Two under-appreciated artists from jazz’s golden age team up on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. Sometimes genius, sometimes eccentric, Butch Warren was once the house bassist on Blue Note records, and has become a local institution in recent decades. His partner this weekend will be Freddie Redd, known for his influential hard bop sound and recordings on Blue Note in the early ’60s. Local saxophonist Brad Linde (***) will also be featured during the 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
