It was a night for the Stanky Leg. And the Cat Daddy. And a shirtless Josh Wolff running around the pitch, swinging his jersey like a madman before leaping into the stands to celebrate with the fans. And in the first game after the worst season in team history, it was, above all, a night of redemption for D.C. United.
United came out blazing against the Crew, using two goals from the nimble-footed Charlie Davies and one from an opportunistic Wolff to hammer Columbus 3-1 in front of 18,132 at RFK Stadium. All three goals came during a 26-minute spurt in the second half, and did wonders to shake off the hangover of last season and get head coach Ben Olsen his first win as the team’s permanent manager.
