According to Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn, “most” of the system’s stations will be covered by the new cameras, and they will be installed over the next six months.
Metro has used cameras inside its stations for some time. After installing exterior cameras at U Street and Anacostia in the mid-2000s, WMATA installed more outside 12 stations in 2009. While they may help authorities as they investigate crime, there are still several questions about how effective such camera systems actually are at deterring criminal activity.
