Everyone knows that the District of Columbia has elected six different people as its mayor since Home Rule was instituted in 1973. But did you know that the city has also had 53 Youth Mayors during that same time span? “Got a lot of turnover there, don’t we?” remarked Mayor Vince Gray this morning, before clarifying that there’s Youth Mayors at various levels of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI). The latest? David Williams, who was recently elected the 53rd Youth Mayor of the District by 400 participants in the MYLI.

Williams, a senior at St. John’s College High School who lives in Ward 4 and is planning to attend the University of Maryland in the fall, was sworn in to the position by Gray during the Mayor’s weekly press conference this morning. Williams kept his inaugural address short and sweet. “I’m going to make my parents proud,” he said with a big smile, before giving individual shout-outs to his friends at St. John’s.

“He obviously has it too, doesn’t he?” Gray teased after Williams’ remarks.
