The District’s ability to manage its fleet has taken quite a beating in recent months. But with gas officially breaking the five dollar-ceiling at the notoriously expensive Watergate Exxon station and rental car companies charging customers north of nine bucks a gallon for unleaded, it’s refreshing to see there’s at least one agency doing something good when it comes to its cars.

D.C. Water announced this morning that it has purchased two new Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid electric cars, one of which has been assigned to General Manager George Hawkins. Hawkins is pretty excited about the new wheels (“I’ve had my eyes on the Volt since General Motors announced its launch,” Hawkins said in a statement released this morning), as one can tell from the time he spent showing it off with NBC4 reporter Tom Sherwood.

Last fall, the District’s Department of Transportation installed the city’s first public electric car charging station outside the Reeves Center.
