Last week, we highlighted a story about a group of people who wanted to open a farmers’ market in the parking lot of the Naylor Road Metro station, only to be turned down by WMATA because of a rule restricting the sale of food and drink on Metro property. So what will be going in next to the station?
The Gazette reports that the Prince George’s County Planning Board approved a plan yesterday to build a 1.6 million-square-foot office and retail development on the site, most of which would host workers with the Department of Homeland Security. DHS, of course, is building its new headquarters but a short Metro ride away at St. Elizabeth’s; but we’re more interested in the retail part of the proposal. The area where the development would be located is notoriously bereft of options for purchasing fresh food. Will the plans be an attractive option for a grocery provider?
Reviews of the parcel and site plan won’t occur until the end of May and the beginning of June, though — so it’ll probably be several months before we get an answer to that question.
