Scare Force One 122 – 81 DC DemonCats
In what was destined to be an epic bout, defending league champions the DC DemonCats took on undefeated Scare Force One for the DC Rollergirls Season Five Championship at the Armory on Saturday. In their two previous meetings, both teams fought tooth and nail against each other, with the Fright Attendants nabbing the win each time. Saturday was no different, as Scare Force jetted their way to a 41-point victory over the ‘Cats.
Warming up the crowd was a hard-fought expo bout between the Cherry Blossom Bombshells and the Capital Offenders (a mix of All-Star team members and Skaters on Tap or currently unaffiliated league members), with the ladies in pink grabbing a decisive 69-30 win.
In the afternoon’s main event, a heavily defensive first period saw Scare Force and the DemonCats go neck-and-neck through the first five jams. DemonCat jammer Camilla the Hun gave her team a tentative lead with two grand slams, but Scare Force answered back with 15 points from Lois Slain, bringing the score to 22-18 in Scare Force’s favor. A hit-and-quit jam by Hun tied things up at 22-22, with 20 minutes still on the clock.
The next three jams were scoreless, but Hun soon remedied the situation by continuing her scoring spree with 10 more points, bringing the score to 32-23 in the Cats’ favor at around the halfway point of the period. The DemonCats continued to maintain their lead despite valiant efforts by Scare Force jammers Lenore Gore and Marion Barrycuda, and the period ended with the Fright Attendants down by 12, at 52-40.
The second half saw Scare Force One take the track with a renewed sense of purpose, putting themselves back on top within the first five minutes. A double grand slam by ‘Cuda was quickly followed by another 10 points from Chinese Cheker (skating unopposed and with only two DemonCat blockers on the track), bringing the score to 64-59. Little to no points over the course of the next seven jams kept the score pretty tight, even tying the game 72-72 at the 17-minute mark thanks to a quick four-point pickup by Hun.
But with one explosive 19-point powerjam by Scare Force’s Feral Streak, the Fright Attendants took decisive control of the game. The ‘Cats were never fully able to recover as SF1 took lead jammer for the majority of the remaining time, including another double grand slam by Cheker in the second-to-last jam of the bout. As the clock ran down, the crowd went wild for Scare Force, who, with their 122-81 victory, took back the trophy from the DemonCats for the first time in two seasons.
