Coffee buffs in the Mid City area were thrilled when news broke last August that the award-winning baristas of Peregrine Espresso would be opening up a second location at 1718 14th Street NW. Last night, DCist got a first look at the new digs.
Anyone familiar with Peregrine’s original location at 660 Pennsylvania Ave SE will feel right at home inside the new shop’s cozy, wood-paneled confines — though with limited seating, Peregrine’s designed more for the on-the-go coffee drinker than the coffeehouse dweller. But, oh, that coffee: owner Ryan Jensen recommended a sample of a bean from Burundi, which was subtle and delicious, and didn’t require the normal accoutrements for full enjoyment.
The shop still has a couple of kinks to work out before opening: when we stopped by last night, the espresso machine was on the fritz, and the shop’s DCRA inspections were still in the process of being completed. Jensen hopes to open up sometime in the next week, however — those along 14th Street anxious to stop in (and there are several, based on the number of people who simply popped in while we were taking a look around) should keep an eye on Peregrine’s Twitter feed for the latest news on an official opening date.
