(AP Photo/Gretchen Ertl)For the first time since 2006, the Maryland men’s lacrosse team is heading to the Final Four. The unseeded Terps (12-4) dramatically upset top-ranked Syracuse (15-2) in a NCAA quarterfinal at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.
Maryland commanded a 5-3 lead going into the fourth quarter when the Orange came roaring back and fired in two unanswered goals, leading to a sudden-death overtime. With the momentum swinging in Syracuse’s favor, Maryland senior Grant Catalino made a game-winning low-to-high shot with 32 seconds left in OT.
The Terps controlled the pace of the game by winning the time of possession battle, as well as outshooting Syracuse by 12. Maryland’s upset of the country’s top-ranked program has punched their ticket to an improbable home game in nearby Baltimore during this year’s NCAA Final Four.
Maryland will face — but who else — the #5 Duke Blue Devils, who defeated Notre Dame 7-5 last weekend, in the semifinals this Saturday immediately following Denver vs. Virginia.
Saturday’s game takes place at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Faceoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN2. All-session tickets are available at $92 and can be purchased through the Terrapin Ticket Office.
