Eleanor Holmes Norton, in her time as D.C. Delegate, has always been one of the National Mall’s most strident supporters. So it’s hardly surprising that Norton wants to use the recent dancing demonstrations at the Jefferson Memorial as a leaping point to promote public use of the grounds.

Norton wants to declare July 30 as “National Dance Day,” which would involve the Delegate organizing her own dance party. “When people go as far as Flash Mob dancing without a permit on the Mall, we should see such a response from the public as a wake-up call to make the Mall more with it,” said Norton in a statement. I’m not sure that this is exactly the kind of reaction that those who were arrested for dancing inside the Jefferson Memorial were hoping for.

Oh, and just in case you got excited about the potential of Norton clashing with Park Police, she’s already got a permit for the date; though, based on the footage above of Norton getting jiggy with Mayor Vince Gray, the dance police might have grounds to issue a warrant.
