UPDATE (5:45 p.m.): It appears as if the man who was causing all the fuss has been removed from the scene by EMS. Police are still investigating, but some of the emergency presence should be clearing from the area soon.
UPDATE (4:30 p.m.): Okay, to reset — the large police presence in the area around the intersection of Irving and Mount Pleasant Streets is still on the scene. It appears that the police are figuring out how to deal with one man inside a residence near that intersection. The Post is reporting that the man may be armed “with a screwdriver or screwdrivers.”
From the tips of readers, people who have been stuck inside places like the Flying Fish Coffee and Tea at 3064 Mt. Pleasant Street NW are being let out, but police are telling people that most anything west of 16th Street in that immediate area might not be accessible for some time. If you live there, you might want to make some happy hour plans now to ride out the delay.
D.C. authorities have responded to a “possible barricade situation” on the 1600 block of Irving Street NW this afternoon — police have told WJLA that the incident may involve a “violent patient.”
Currently, readers tell DCist that 16th and Irving Streets in the immediate area have been blocked off to traffic, and an armored car as well as several heavily armed officers are on scene. Bus service through the area has also been diverted for the time being. We’d steer clear of the area for the time being, if you can, and we’ll pass along more details when we hear them.
