D.C. officials just cannot keep their grip on Brandon Sparrow — the 18-year-old ward of the District has now escaped from city custody for the third time. Sparrow was coming back to the District from a secure, psychiatric facility in Salt Lake City for a court hearing, when he fled from authorities at Baltimore Washington International Airport on Sunday. Sparrow, who was to appear in court on charges that he assaulted a guard at the New Beginnings detention facility on May 6, apparently told the guards at BWI that he needed to use the restroom, then slipped away.
Sparrow previously escaped with three other youth from the Summerville Behavioral Health Center in South Carolina, another D.C. out-of-state placement facility, in April; his alleged assault on a guard at New Beginnings occurred less than two weeks after he was brought back into Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services custody.
Police have not released a photo of Sparrow, but he is described as an African American, measuring 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds and last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue shorts.
